    HCl SYNTHESIS UNIT 
    

Graphite India HCl Synthesis Units are designed and manufactured for the production of high purity HCl solution from chlorine and hydrogen. Unit consists mainly of graphite burner, combustion chamber, falling film type absorber, adiabatic tail gas tower, vent gas fan, inter connecting graphite pipe lines, expansion bellows, etc. hydrogen and chlorine gases are burnt through graphite burner inside the combustion chamber which is jacketed with cooling water.

  

GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF BURNER, COMBUSTION CHAMBER & ABSORBER

The burner is designed to ensure complete combustion of chlorine gas. Although the actual flame temperature depends upon purity of feed gas composition, it is usually 2500˚C for pure chlorine and hydrogen gas stream. Combustion Chamber is protected for longer life by a liquid film inside.The produced HCl gas enters a falling film type isothermal absorb in which HCl gas is absorbed in process water/weak acid co-currently and heat of absorption is removed by cooling water flowing through the shell of absorber.Absorber can either be polyblock or shell & tube type. The unique design of distributor ensures an efficient absorption producing 30-35% HCl solution at suitable storage temperature. Once through unabsorbed gases are scrubbed with process water counter currently in an adiabatic packed column.This ensures complete absorption of unabsorbed HCl gas, leaving only inert gases in the vent. In order to achieve a higher turndown ratio, a recirculation loop is provided to maintain minimum wetted perimeter in the absorber.Safe and reliable operation of plant is ensured by providing safety and control instrument loops in the system as shown in the sketch.

    SALIENT FEATURES 
   

SAFE AND RELIABLE OPERATION : Designed with reliable safety instrumentation loop which ensures automatic shut-off with the help of flame detector and security valves.

Auto purging of nitrogen in case of flame failure and power failure.

Automatic shutdown of unit in case of low pressure of Cl2, H2,  air and low flow of cooling water.

Restart is not possible till all the requisite parameters are set to conditions.

AUTO REMOTE START-UP, POLLUTION FREE : Unit is so designed that stack gas is pollution free and well within the Government regulation limits.

HIGH PURITY ACID : Product obtained is free of iron, chlorine and suitable for pharmaceutical and food industries.

  •  

CAPACITY RANGE AND FLEXIBILITY : Available in wide range starting 2 M.T. per day. Turndown ratio upto 20% of design capacity.

  •  

LOW PRESSURE OPERATION / BURNING OF SNIFF GAS : Burner is designed to operate under low pressure of feed gases.

Sniff gases containing low percentage of chlorine and high level of inert or oxygen (residual gases from chlorine compressor) can be synthesized.

     HCl ABSORPTION SYSTEM 

 
   

Graphite India HCl absorption system consists of mainly an isothermal falling film type absorber, an adiabatic tail-gas tower and a recirculation pump. The Isothermal absorber can be in polyblock type or shell and tube type construction. The absorber is provided with weirs to facilitate the formation of a liquid film. HCl gas and the water film travel co-currently in the absorber and the gas gets absorbed into the liquid film. The heat of absorption generated is continuously removed with the help of cooling / chilled water, which is supplied on the service side. The bottom product from the main absorber is 30 – 35% hydrochloric acid depending on the temperature of the cooling media.

  

Unabsorbed gases from the absorber are absorbed in the tail gas tower which is having a packing bed of ceramic / graphite packing media. The tail-gas tower can also be provided with bubble cap trays over the packed bed. It is possible to achieve a turn-down ratio of zero to 100% with the help of proper recirculation. These systems are also suitable for gases coming from batch-process.

 
The HCl absorption system can handle weak gases having HCl content as low as 10% by weight.
